Could Bob Melvin become the new manager of the San Francisco Giants? The buzz has intensified especially after the Giants made an important announcement on Tuesday, per The Athletic's Andrew Baggerly.

“Just got this advisory: ‘Giants to hold press conference tomorrow to make big announcement.' (I do not think this is about the Cruise uniform patches),” Baggerly tweeted on Tuesday.

With the way things are going, Bob Melvin becoming the Giants' new manager is just a mere formality. The San Diego Padres granted Melvin permission to interview with the Giants on Monday.

Although Melvin is still under contract with the Padres, the fact San Diego gave him permission hints at their tenuous relationship. Despite having sluggers such as Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Fernado Tatis, Jr., the Padres won just 82 games and missed the postseason again. Bob Melvin led the Padres to the NLCS in 2022 but lost to Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies. Melvin had an overall 171-153 win-loss record in his two years with San Diego.

Bob Melvin will make the Giants winners again

Should Bob Melvin get the Giants job, this isn't his first stint with the franchise. He played catcher for San Francisco during the pinnacle of the heated Giants-Oakland Athletics rivalry of the late 1980s.

Bob Melvin has 21 years of managerial experience tucked under his belt. His 11-season stint with the Oakland Athletics from 2011 to 2021 was his most successful to date. He led Oakland to six postseason appearances behind a core consisting of Josh Reddick, Josh Donaldson, and Marcus Semien. The Athletics have become baseball's worst team since Melvin left following the 2021 MLB season.

Now, it seems Bob Melvin will return to the Bay area and replace Gabe Kapler. The Giants have missed the postseason seven times since they won the World Series in 2014. Expect Bob Melvin to turn their fortunes around in the next several years.
