New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has gotten a lot of heat for his play during the teams struggle to start the season and now former player Rich Gannon is saying it's time the future Hall of Famer starts to consider retirement. Manning has turned into the check-down king this season and he has had a hard time being accurate on deep passes.
“He has to start looking at that retirement situation more seriously,’’ Rich Gannon said on CBS Sports Network’s NFL Monday QB via the New York Post. “He is in his 15th season. They’re 1-5. They have no offensive line and they haven’t played well around him. On top of that he has to deal with Odell Beckham Jr.’s antics every week. I think it is a mess right now in New York.’’
Manning has thrown for 1662 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. The offensive line hasn't done him any help but a lot of the blame for the play falls squarely back on Manning.
Another former quarterback Steve Beuerlein doesn't know if it's time for Manning to hang up the cleats but thinks he needs to become more of a leader.
“He’s been dealing with this kind of criticism for the last several years,’’ Beuerlein said. “I think Eli’s biggest strength is also one of his biggest weaknesses. He’s so even-keeled. He’s so consistent with his personality.
The Giants next game is on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons and their secondary is weak. If Manning can't have success against that secondary all hope might be lost for him and the team.
