The San Francisco Giants have announced that they have designated former All-Star second baseman Joe Panik for assignment, per Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors.

Remember: the MLB has eliminated August trades, meaning that the Giants are likely hoping that someone picks Panik up off waivers in order to claim the remainder of his salary. He is owed $1.12 million for the remainder of the year.

Panik has registered a slash line of just .235/.310/.317 with three home runs and 27 RBI over 388 plate appearances this season, a far cry from the types of numbers he posted earlier in his career.

The 28-year-old was originally selected by San Francisco in the first round (28th pick overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft and went on to make his big-league debut in 2014, slashing .305/.343/.368 with one long ball and 18 RBI across 287 trips to the plate.

Then, the following year, Panik had the most productive season of his career, slashing .312/.378/.455 with eight dingers and 37 RBI through 382 plate appearances, making the All-Star team as a result.

Panik would go on to take a pretty big step back in 2016, as he slashed .239/.315/.379 with 10 homers and 62 RBI over 526 trips to the dish, but the next season, he bounced back, slashing .288/.347/.421 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI over 573 plate appearances.

The last two seasons, however, injuries have derailed Panik, as he slashed a mere .254/.307/.332 with four homers and RBI across 358 trips to the plate in 2017.

Panik has dealt with groin, back and thumb injuries as well as multiple concussions.

The Giants currently own a record of 56-57.
