Rory McIlroy is one of many PGA Tour members set to compete in the US Open this week. However, the league is without many of its stars, as they joined the new and controversial LIV Golf. Ahead of the championship, McIlroy once again voiced his opinion on the PGA vs LIV saga.
According to ESPN, McIlroy said that many golfers took the “easy way out” at his news conference on Tuesday.
He said that he understands why golfers, like Phil Mickelson, whose “best days are behind them” joined LIV Golf. However, McIlroy, 33, doesn't understand why golfers similar in age to him made the switch.
“I understand. Yes, because a lot of these guys are in their late 40s. In Phil's case, early 50s. Yeah, I think everyone in this room would say to themselves that their best days are behind them,” McIlroy said ahead of the US Open, all quotes courtesy of ESPN. “That's why I don't understand for the guys that are a similar age to me going because I would like to believe that my best days are still ahead of me, and I think theirs are, too. So that's where it feels like you're taking the easy way out.”
While McIlroy doesn't fault Mickelson for joining the league, he isn't a fan of how he handled his business.
“As a golfer, I have the utmost respect for Phil. I've been disappointed with how he went about what he has done, but I think he has come back and shown some remorse about how he has handled some things, so I think he has learned from that,” he said. “Am I disappointed he has taken the route that he has taken? I am, but I still respect him tremendously.”
The US Open begins on June 16 at The Country Club.
