The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Sunday that they would be parting ways with forward Chandler Parsons after a long and unproductive relationship.

ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon reported a story that might have fast forwarded the split between the two parties:

It's nice to see Chandler Parsons show some passion on a basketball court after being unable to play at 100 percent for so long. However, this might have crossed the line and accelerated his departure from the team.

Parsons has long been considered as the owner of the league's worst contract. He has been getting paid north of $20 million a year for four years and had posted nothing but replacement level numbers for the Grizzlies.

In Parson's best season with the team, he averaged 7.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 46 percent from the field.

These numbers are unacceptable for such a high salary, and it was the smart move to terminate this contract.

After a strong start to the season, the Grizzlies have faded back out of playoff contention. They currently hold a record of 18-21 and have lost five straight games.

The team is in dire need of another scorer. Marc Gasol and Mike Conley are both excellent players that can score the ball, but they can't carry the team to playoff contention by themselves, especially in the Western Conference.

Hopefully, both parties can figure out a solution. Chandler Parsons may still be able to contribute to an NBA team, and the Grizzlies have some choices as replacements for his roster spot. It will be interesting to see how both paths end up finishing.
