On Wednesday, the WNBA announced that Brittney Griner was being named an honorary WNBA All-Star. She unfortunately cannot take part in the event because she is still detained in a Russian jail. After the news of the honorary title was revealed, Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant once again showed his support and love for Brittney Griner.
He simply retweeted the announcement with the caption”FREEBG,” obviously standing for Free Brittney Griner.
This was not the first time Morant has shown his support for the Phoenix Mercury star player. Just over a month ago, Morant sent a prayer emoji retweeting someone's post wishing well and a speedy return with a sad photo of her incarceration. Of course, that return is yet to happen.
Brittney Griner was arrested back in February 2022. She was allegedly caught with multiple vape cartridges on her possession at a Russian airport. Inside the cartridges were supposedly hashish oil derived from cannabis. That comes with it a 10-year prison sentence in Russia.
It seems like a bit of a reach to sentence someone to jail for that long for something as trivial as marijuana extract.
Many people believe that her incarceration has been tied to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When Russia marched on their neighboring country and started committing alleged war crimes, the United States as well as the United Nations began helping Ukraine. The United States sent military aid, financial assistance, food, among other things.
This act appears to have been perceived by Russia as a threat to them. Brittney Griner has therefore been caught in the crossfire between the nations. There still is not telling when Brittney Griner might be released, if at all.
