The Cleveland Guardians are working to extend star pitcher Emmanuel Clase, per Guardians beat writer Paul Hoynes. Although this may not have been the Jose Ramirez extension news Guardians fans have been hoping for, signing Clase is undoubtedly a positive move for the club.

The flame throwing right-hander was initially acquired from the Texas Rangers in return for former Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber. At the time, Cleveland fans scoffed the trade. But Kluber ended up spending just one injury-riddled season in Texas while Clase has emerged as a star reliever.

The Cleveland Guardians clearly won that deal.

The 24-year old is known for his filthy 100 MPH-plus cutter. He finished 2021 with a 1.29 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 24 saves in 2021. His strong performance led to a fifth place finish in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

He spent the beginning of last year competing with James Karinchak for the closer role. However, Karinchak labored towards the end of 2021 which gave way to Clase to take over closer duties. With Karinchak injured to open this season, Clase is the clear favorite for save opportunities in Cleveland.

As for Jose Ramirez, it was recently reported that extension talks were intensifying between him and the Cleveland Guardians. Nothing has come to fruition yet but their could still be a deal made prior to opening day. The Guardians could salvage their offseason by extending Ramirez after signing just two underwhelming free agents during the winter.

Emmanuel Clase and Jose Ramirez will look to lead the Guardians to a successful 2022 campaign in the American League Central.
