The New York Yankees' showdown with the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday turned ugly after fans at the Yankee Stadium started throwing trash and jeering at Myles Straw, Oscar Mercado and the rest of the visitors.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Straw and Mercado opened up about what led to the high tensions, indicating that some Yankees supporters celebrated and taunted the team after Steven Kwan suffered an injury while hitting the wall.
“Some of the things that were said to him [Kwan] just weren't going to fly,” Straw said on the fans' behavior, per Blake Ruane of Cover the Corner.
Mercado, meanwhile, called the league to take action on the incident and hold those who showcased the unacceptable behavior accountable. While he has no problem for people celebrating or jeer, throwing trash at people that could get them hurt should be punished.
Oscar Mercado was on the receiving end of the trash-throwing from Yankees fan, which occurred in the ninth inning following Gleyber Torres' walk-off hit. Sure enough, it ruined the celebration for New York as Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton tried to calm things down.
While the incident ended rather quickly as officials got involved to stop the situation from escalating further, it certainly didn't sit well with the rest of the Guardians. For his part, Myles Straw hit back at Yankees fans and called them “classless.”
“Worst fan base on the planet,” Straw added, per The Athletic,
The Yankees may have won 5-4, but the fan incident certainly dampened the mood.
