The Eastern Conference is a wild, wide open race for anyone outside the top two seeds. So, add the Miami Heat to one of the many teams likely busy making countless calls in the coming days.

That said, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN, no one should expect earth-shattering activity from the Heat on or before the Feb. 8 trade deadline. Here’s Lowe’s short note on the team in his recent column:

“Miami does not appear to have traction on anything major, league sources say.”

Don't feel disappointed, Heat Nation. The key word there is “major,” so there's hope that they will still acquire valuable, mid-tier pieces. Other insiders have also indicated that the Heat are still pursuing players that will be aimed to play significant parts in the upcoming playoff push.

Sean Deveney of Sporting News wrote about his insights Monday night:

“With Dion Waiters out for the rest of the season after ankle surgery, the focus has been on acquiring some punch on the bench, and Miami has been chasing Memphis guard Tyreke Evans earnestly.

But the Heat owe their first-round pick this year to Phoenix, and the Grizzlies want a first-rounder for Evans. The Heat have been willing to trade third-year man Justise Winslow, but a straight deal of a 21-year-old like Winslow for a few months of Evans doesn’t make much sense for Miami.”

The Heat are 29-24 and rank fourth in the East. Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside are the cornerstones of the group, but overall, they run a team-oriented system with no true constant option.

Evans, a do-it-all type of player, could fit the Heat well. He can help distribute the ball, be a decoy whenever he goes through the lane, and be a solid go-to guy in crucial situations. The nine-year veteran is currently averaging 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists for the Grizzlies.
