Charlotte Hornets rookie guard Malik Monk has been pulled from the team’s rotation due to his poor defense, the New York Post’s Marc Berman reports.

The Hornets are currently being coached by Stephen Silas, who is filling in for head coach Steve Clifford while Clifford takes an indefinite leave of absence from the team to address health concerns. The struggling Hornets have gone just 2-10 in their last 12 games.

Monk was a DNP-Coach’s decision in the Hornets’ most recent game against the Portland Trail Blazers, which was actually the first time the Hornets had lost in four games this season where Monk didn’t play.

Monk, the No. 11 pick in this year’s draft out of Kentucky, has had a disappointing rookie campaign thus far. He has seen his minutes decline month over month and has had a rough time not only on defense, which was a knock on him heading into the draft.

Known primarily as a scorer, Monk has also struggled mightily on that end of the court. He’s averaging just 6.3 points on 33.5 percent shooting in 15.6 minutes this season. Those numbers have dropped even more in December, where he’s putting up a mere 3.1 points on 26 percent shooting.

With Monk out of the rotation, Michael Carter-Williams and Jeremy Lamb will likely see added time off the bench to back up starters Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum.
