Dortmund vs. Real Madrid storylines
Real Madrid and Dortmund enter the Champions League Final under very different circumstances. Real Madrid is the heavy favorite because they have been dominant all year long, as they have in the Champions League itself throughout their history. The team has 14 Champions League titles, which is seven more than the next closest team. They last won in 2022, and they also won the La Liga title for the 36th time this year.
Real Madrid has the second most goals (26) in the tournament, and they are completing their passes at a 91.2% rate. Vinicius Junior has passed the ball particularly well, as his five assists are the most in the tournament. Rodrygo has been the team's best goal scorer with five goals in Champions League play. Real Madrid's wins come over Napoli, Union Berlin, Leipzig, Manchester City, and Bayern, the latter coming during the semi-finals.
Dortmund, on the other hand, is more of a Cinderella story. They finished fifth in the Bundesliga, meaning they have to win at Wembley to be invited back to the next Champions League. Their sole Champions League victory came way back in 1997.
While Real Madrid's offense has been potent, Dortmund has been one of the best defensive teams in the tournament. Gregor Kobel has a tournament-leading 42 goals saved, and Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck rank first and second in balls recovered, with 114 and 77, respectively. Dortmund's first Champions League game this tournament ended in a loss to Paris. The team started to get hot after that, as they collected wins over Newcastle, Milan, PSV, Atletico de Madrid, and then in a revenge game against Paris.
Dortmund has played the underdog role well in this tournament, and they have continued to beat any of the powerhouse teams placed in front of them. Will that continue against Real Madrid, or will the tournament's most-winningest team extend their Champions League titles record to 15?
