After signing a max contract in 2016 to remain with the Miami Heat, the Hassan Whiteside experiment has fully reached its breaking point only two years later. All that is left is for the handshake and tears — or, at least that's what many are speculating entering the season.

Despite averaging a double-double of 10.5 points and 11.4 rebounds, to go along with 1.7 swats per game the previous season, these were his worst numbers in three years. Initially, these don’t seem half bad, except when you realize the Heat still owe him over $52-million.

By comparison, centers like Clint Capela and Jusuf Nurkic have produced similar numbers, but were compensated far-less than Whiteside.

Additionally, the enigmatic big man has clashed with Coach Erik Spoelstra on more than one occasion, citing the lack of playing time and misuse of his skills as the main issue. While both parties have momentarily mended fences, there’s no assurance that this relationship will get through the test of time.

As the shot-blocking specialist is already pushing on 30 years of age, it may be time for the Heat to ship him off to a new team. If they do decide to consider this scenario, one ideal trade partner would be the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Acquiring Tristan Thompson, Kyle Korver, and a 2020 first-round pick may not be the kings random they had hoped to receive in return, but this is a fair deal that helps Miami become better.

For starters, Thompson and Korver are both veterans who better understand the nature of playing in the NBA. Judging from their character, they won’t demand for extended playing time, especially if it’s to give way to younger players. This works well for Spo and company because he now has the luxury of investing in Bam Adebayo or Kelly Olynyk, both of whom are more suited to the modern game.

Furthermore, both Cavs players can still contribute, given the right situation. TT is monster on the boards while the Ashton Kutcher look-alike is a career 43.1% shooter from the great beyond and can still make it rain in most occasions. At the very least, they can initiate a buyout, which would rid themselves of their contracts.

Cleveland, on the other hand, will be a fresh new start for Whiteside as he immediately fills a gaping hole in their center position. Given his inside presence and rim protection, he’ll be a great fit next to Kevin Love, who is a known liability on defense but can space the floor on the other end.

Ultimately, being the unquestioned big man on a team like the Cavaliers will put Hassan in a sink-or-swim position. He should be given all the chances to prove his worth in an effort to cash in once more in 2020. As Whiteside enters the deeper waters of 30, he should likewise evolve his game to fit the contemporary basketball system.

Otherwise, he may find himself out of place as the basketball world changes before his eyes.

This may not be the grandest deal out there, but its something both clubs should at least consider. Many in the NBA often underestimate a change of scenery, yet this undoubtedly has the ability to completely change a player’s perception and performance. I believe that this deal lies on that same premise and fans should see a new Hassan Whiteside sooner rather than later.
