Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are playing in a semifinal match on Thursday in Paris, but this clash feels like the final. The winner of this match will be heavily favored in Saturday's Roland Garros women's singles championship battle, all because of what happened on Wednesday in the women's quarterfinals. Swiatek and Gauff booked their semifinal spots on Tuesday. Everyone waited to see who would join them in the semis. The favorites on Wednesday were fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina and second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka. Rybakina and Sabalenka are both major champions. Sabalenka had faced Swiatek in the Madrid and Rome finals. Sabalenka had also reached seven straight major-tournament semifinals. There was every expectation that Sabalenka would advance to the semifinals, and it was more likely than not that Rybakina would join her, though Rybakina wasn't quite as large a favorite in the quarters.

Neither Sabalenka nor Rybakina advanced. Sabalenka lost to Mirra Andreeva, and Rybakina was taken out by Jasmine Paolini. Swiatek is the queen of red clay, having won three of the last four French Opens, but even if she loses to Gauff, it's clear that Gauff will be the commanding favorite over Paolini or Andreeva.
Both Swiatek and Gauff are elite players, but they really have to focus in on the task at hand and not think this is a championship match. It's more about beating the opponent on the other side of the net and executing a good game plan. Swiatek is the favorite, but Gauff is a tenacious competitor. The ruler of Roland Garros — or should we say, “Poland Garros” — has won 30 of her last 34 games. She has won three of her last five sets by a 6-0 score, and the other two sets by a 6-2 margin. She not only wins, but wins comfortably. She covered the spread in each of her last two matches. She is an in-form player, playing on her best surface and at the tournament she values more than any others. It is not easy to bet against her in this match or in any French Open match.
Why Coco Gauff Could Cover The Spread
This is the difference between evaluating tennis players and evaluating betting situations. In terms of evaluating tennis players, Swiatek is clearly better than Gauff on clay, because Swiatek is better than every other women's tennis player in the world on clay. She is a heavyweight on clay and will always have the upper hand at the French Open. However, while Swiatek is the better tennis player on clay, the betting situation is something else altogether. In terms of a betting calculus, Coco Gauff — while not as good as Swiatek — is good at keeping matches relatively close. Gauff is a tremendous competitor, and while Swiatek might come away with a straight-set win, those two sets probably won't be blowouts.
