The fullback position is far from being the most appealing position in the NFL. Over the course of history, the fullback position has been relied upon to line up in front of the running back and manufacture a hole to run through.

But in recent years, teams have begun utilizing fullbacks in a variety of ways. Could the fullback position be making a comeback in the NFL?

Not too long ago, it seemed as if the fullback position was heading toward becoming extinct. When talking about the position, it was like discussing dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth when the world was first created.

If you were a team who still had a fullback, your offense was considered to be outdated and behind the times. However, some teams have started to revert back to having a fullback incorporated in their offense.

As Field Yates pointed out, the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, and Minnesota Vikings all made the playoffs. The one thing that all of those teams have in common is that they deploy a fullback.

While fullbacks aren't a position that is included in the All-Pro teams, they still proved their importance in 2019. Plenty of teams that use a fullback exponentially are proven to have a more potent offense.

The Ravens had Patrick Ricard to create holes for Mark Ingram and Lamar Jackson en route to having the No. 1 rushing offense in the league. On the other hand, he also hauled in seven receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown in 2019.

The Vikings have C.J. Ham, who aided in Dalvin Cook having the best season of his young career. Ham also contributed 17 reception, 149 yards, and a touchdown as a receiver.

As for the 49ers, they use Kyle Juszczyk in a more prominent role in their offense. Besides being the lead blocker in the backfield, there will be times where he is lined up as a de facto tight end. By doing so, he tallied 20 catches for 239 yards and a score in 2019.

Last but not least, the Saints, Packers, and Bills used Zach Line, Danny Vitale, and Patrick DiMarco in more traditional fullback roles. Still, all three of those teams benefitted from having a fullback featured in the offense.

In addition, the New England Patriots struggled to run the ball effectively in 2019. One of the major reasons why is that James Develin—their starting fullback—had a season-ending injury.

Near the end of the season, New England attempted to thrust Elandon Roberts into the position. With them attempting to use a linebacker at fullback, it goes to show how important the position is.

There's no doubt that fullbacks aren't the flashiest players on the football field. At the same time, they can make a difference in a multitude of ways. As a result, teams in the NFL are beginning to realize that it's time to reconsider using a fullback once again.
