The Atlanta Falcons suffered their latest embarrassing loss on Sunday, falling to the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 37-10, dropping them to 1-6 in what has been a catastrophic season in every way imaginable.

The Falcons entered 2019 with high expectations. They had a high-powered offense, a healthier defense and a veteran group of guys that seemed primed for another playoff run. Heck, perhaps even a Super Bowl run.

Instead, Atlanta has been one of the worst teams in the NFL and owns the same record as the lowly Washington Redskins.

That even though the Falcons have one of the most talented offenses in the league, a unit that includes Matt Ryan, Devonta Freeman, Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley and Austin Hooper.

But barring a miracle in which the Falcons somehow win nine of their last 10 games (yeah, that isn't happening), Atlanta is cooked, and with the Week 8 trade deadline approaching, it might seriously need to consider trading some of its veteran pieces.

Take Freeman, for example.

The running back carried the ball seven times for just 19 yards against the Rams before being ejected for throwing a punch at Los Angeles defensive lineman Aaron Donald.

It was not only a microcosm of the Falcons' season, but Freeman's, as well.

On the year as a whole, the 27-year-old has rushed for 294 yards while averaging a meager 3.5 yards per carry. He has not scored a touchdown on the ground, and while he has logged three receiving scores, Freeman is paid to be a top rusher.

At this point, you have to wonder how much he has left in the tank, as Freeman missed almost all of last season due to a groin injury, and in 2017, he dealt with a concussion.

Freeman last made the Pro Bowl in 2016, when he tallied back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances after posting two straight 1,000-yard seasons.

Since then, Freeman has essentially been an afterthought, much like the Falcons as a collective.

Remember: Atlanta made it all the way to the Super Bowl during the 2016-17 campaign before ultimately blowing a 28-3 lead in a devastating overtime loss to the New England Patriots.

The Falcons haven't quite been the same since, and based on how much of an unmitigated disaster they have been in 2019, it's hard to envision them ever turning it back around with this core group of guys.

But Atlanta almost surely isn't going to move its franchise quarterback in Ryan (even if he is aging). It just extended Jones, so trading him doesn't seem like an option, either.

That leaves Freeman, who could entice another team into giving up a decent package for him under the hope that he can regain his Pro Bowl form in different surroundings.

Let's face it: the Falcons are done. Not just for this season, but for beyond, as well.

If they run it back with same team in 2020, they aren't going to go anywhere.

Freeman is under contract through 2022, so rival teams would not have to worry about him walking after one year if they trade for him. And while his best days to seem to be in his rearview mirror, he is still just 27, so perhaps he has a second wind.

So long as Atlanta can recoup some real value for Freeman, it should trade him now.
