The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed defensive lineman Marcell Dareus on the injured reserve list and have signed fellow defensive lineman Akeem Spence to take his place, according to the team.

Dareus underwent core muscle surgery this week.

In six games this season, the veteran logged 13 tackles and a half of a sack.

Dareus, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills with the third overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games during his rookie campaign, registering 43 tackles, 5.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. By his third season, Dareus was a Pro Bowler after totaling 71 tackles, 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

The 29-year-old then made a second straight Pro Bowl appearance while also earning a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2014 after racking up 49 tackles, 10 sacks and a forced fumble.

Dareus' strong 2014 campaign led to him earning a massive six-year, $100 million contract extension in September 2015, one that he never lived up to.

In fact, the Bills parted ways with Dareus during the 2017 season, trading him to the Jaguars.

That season, Dareus totaled 28 tackles and two sacks in 14 games between both clubs and was part of a dominant Jacksonville defense that made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game.

However, since landing the big-time contract, Dareus has not come close to reaching his former level of production, as he managed just 32 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble during his first full season with the Jags last year.

The Jaguars are 3-4 and will take on the New York Jets on Sunday.
