The Jacksonville Jaguars defense will have a new person on the Mike this season. Linebacker Myles Jack is set to step into the middle of that defense in place of the retired Paul Posluszny. Jack got a taste of playing that role last season in the team’s sub-packages. But he says he’s prepared to make that next step up this year.

″I’ve got to take that next step in my career and fully become a pro,″ said Jack per John Reid of the Florida Times-Union. ″I’ve got to take all the responsibility. Last season, I just had the nickel responsibility of playing Mike, but we played a heavy amount of nickel. I just got to make sure I’m solid and we should be fine.″

Jack, 22, was a former second-round pick by the Jaguars in 2016. After playing a limited role during his rookie season, he impressed during his sophomore campaign. He played and started all 16 games, making 90 tackles (second on the team) with two sacks.

He also famously had a fumble recovery for a touchdown brought back in their playoff game against the New England Patriots. Had he not been whistled down, it very well could have seen the Jaguars make the Super Bowl.

Jack will be expected to make more of those terrific plays this season on top of the added responsibility of being the quarterback of that excellent defense which was among the best in the league. It’ll be a lot on his plate, but with what he’s shown thus far in his career, Jack should be up to the task.
