Jacksonville Jaguars star quarterback Gardner Minshew has not been playing his best football of late. As it turns out, it might have a lot to do with a thumb injury with which he's apparently been dealing.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Minshew's right thumb is actually quite messed up—and the Jaguars coaching staff didn't even know about it until just recently:

This means that Minshew has likely been playing through significant pain in his right thumb over the past few weeks. This could explain why he hasn't been performing well for his squad, and why he was reportedly close to being yanked from the starting lineup even before this recent revelation.

Schefter adds that Minshew is now questionable to face the Houston Texans on Sunday:

This might just serve as the final straw for Minshew, who appears to be well on his way to being a backup QB from this point forward. As the report mentioned above, veteran quarterback Mike Glennon is likely to get the nod as the team's new starter should Minshew miss time, and perhaps even beyond that.

It is also worth noting that the Jaguars also have rookie Jake Luton waiting in the wings, and he could also be given a spot start in the near future. The Jaguars are currently 1-6, and it's not like they're going to be in the Super Bowl this season, so now would be a good time to test out the former Oregon State standout.
