The New York Jets have already ruled out C.J. Mosley for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. Despite the growing doubts, Mosley is holding out hope that he will be able to play again this season.

“I’m trying to do everything I can to avoid surgery and play,” Mosley said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “Worst-case scenario: I’ll have to get surgery if next week doesn’t go well.”

During the offseason, New York signed Mosley to a five-year, $85 million deal. At the time, he became the highest-paid inside linebacker in the NFL, until Bobby Wagner received an extension from the Seattle Seahawks.

When the Jets signed Mosley, they were hoping to get the same version of the linebacker that played for the Baltimore Ravens from 2014-2018. Which they did in Week 1 when Mosley had six tackles and a pick-six against the Buffalo Bills.

Unfortunately, Mosley sustained a groin injury that would cause him to miss the next five weeks of action. The veteran inside linebacker returned in Week 7, but he clearly wasn't ready to return in that game versus the New England Patriots.

Ever since, Mosley has been attempting to recover in time to return before the regular season concludes. Up to this point, New York has been reluctant to place Mosley on season-ending injured reserve.

But if Mosley doesn't make any progress by next week, it appears that he will elect to undergo surgery. Therefore, the Jets may be forced to put their lucrative linebacker on injured reserve when it is all said and done.
