Former North Carolina A&T and Bears standout Tarik Cohen has announced his retirement from football, per a post by Adam Schefter on X. He informed the Jets of the decision and will retire effective immediately.

His shocking decision comes two days after he expressed positive sentiments about his comeback.

“I definitely feel all the way back,” Cohen said on Tuesday. “I’m just trying to show the Jets the explosiveness that I have, the smartness that I’ve gained from being in the league, and lift as I rise — help all the guys in my position group.”

Cohen first burst onto the scene at North Carolina A&T, where he dominated the field and collected numerous accolades. His most memorable performance came in the inaugural Celebration Bowl in 2015, where he rushed for 295 yards and scored three touchdowns, leading the Aggies to a thrilling 41-34 victory over Alcorn State. His efforts earned him the Celebration Bowl Offensive MVP award, among other honors.

In 2017, the Chicago Bears selected Cohen in the fourth round of the NFL Draft with the 119th overall pick. Despite standing at just 5'6″ and weighing 180 pounds, Cohen's 4.42 second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine showcased his explosive speed and agility. He quickly proved himself as a versatile weapon for the Bears, dazzling fans with his electrifying plays on special teams and offense.

However, Cohen's career was marred by injuries. In 2020, he suffered a devastating ACL and MCL tear in his knee, sidelining him for an extended period. Just when he seemed poised for a comeback, tragedy struck again in 2022 with an Achilles tear. These injuries severely limited his ability to return to the field and perform at the level that once made him a standout player.

In 2023, Cohen signed with the Carolina Panthers and joined their practice squad, marking a homecoming for the running back. Unfortunately, his time with the Panthers was short-lived, and he was subsequently released from the roster. Cohen then found an opportunity with the New York Jets, particularly significant given the new NFL kickoff rules set to be implemented in the 2024 season. Cohen, known for his prowess as a kick returner, seemed like a perfect fit for the Jets' evolving special teams strategy.

Cohen's sudden retirement marks the end of an era for a player who, despite facing numerous challenges, left an indelible mark on the game. His remarkable college journey and exceptional professional career will undoubtedly be remembered by football fans around the nation.
