Morris Claiborne could return to the New York Jets after all. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said over the weekend that his team is open to bringing back the veteran cornerback.

Morris Claiborne has been with New York each of the last two seasons. He started 15 games at cornerback for the Jets in 2018, finishing with 57 tackles, 14 passes defensed, and two interceptions. Though those numbers were some of the best of Claiborne's career, team followers say that Claiborne's performance fell off last season compared to his surprisingly effective debut with New York in 2017, when he also started 15 games en route to 43 tackles, eight passes defensed and one interception.

The 29-year-old has thus far gone unsigned as a free agent after being placed on injured reserve on December 29th, 2018 with an ankle injury, ridding him of the chance to play 16 games for the first time in his career. The sixth overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, Claiborne struggled to live up to his pre-draft hype as a generational cornerback prospect. Beset by injuries and a purported lack of on-field awareness, the LSU product started 15 games with Dallas as a rookie but wasn't a full-time starter in any of his four remaining seasons with the team.

The Jets have a hole at cornerback behind No. 1 option Trumaine Johnson after Buster Skrine signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency. The team drafted Blessuan Austin in the sixth round last week, but otherwise hasn't addressed its need for a No. 2 cornerback.
