New York Jets second-year quarterback Sam Darnold sustained a left thumb sprain on Sunday in his team's Week 8 road loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Adam Gase announced to the media after the game, per ESPN's Rich Cimini.

After returning from a bout with mononucleosis that knocked the former third-overall pick from the 2018 NFL Draft for three games, Darnold returned in a glorious win against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. What has followed since, however, has been a tragic display on the gridiron for the young signal-caller and the Jets, who were blown out and shut out by the undefeated division rival New England Patriots last week at home and Sunday's loss to the Jaguars in a winnable game.

Darnold threw three interceptions and two touchdowns in Week 8, but Jacksonville's top-notch defense and pass-rush influenced his decision-making for four quarters.

Darnold previously missed practice this past week while dealing with a toe ailment; now he has another extremity bothering him with the thumb sprain on his non-throwing hand.

The second-year quarterback inspired a viral moment (no pun intended) when he was diagnosed with mono earlier in the season and a flashy Monday Night Football graphic displayed the unfortunate reason for his absence. Darnold briefly inspired hope for the Jets with his leadership against the Cowboys, winning their first game of the season in Week 6. Since then, though, Darnold has been nothing but a pick machine despite a poised opening drive today against the Jags.

The banged-up and downtrodden Gang Green continue their road trip with a Week 9 matchup with the Miami Dolphins next Sunday.
