John Cena may have gained fame thanks to the WWE, but that journey seems to be ending.
Speaking to People, Cena reflected on his change in mentality. He is looking to stay healthy for decades — “I have my eyes set 40 years down the road,” he told the outlet.
At the same time, he acknowledges that his professional wrestling career is almost over. He recently appeared at WrestleMania 40, making the save for Cody Rhodes against Roman Reigns. Cena fended off Solo Sikoa before being taken out by the Final Boss Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
“I know my WWE journey is coming to an end, but fitness was a part of my life long before the WWE journey started,” Cena said. “Fitness will be a part of my life, hopefully as long as my heart's beating.
“So the WWE has been a great chapter in my life — it's year 23 for me — and the sun's setting on that chapter in the book, but fitness will never not be a part of my life,” he continued.
It was only a matter of time before Cena hung up the jean shorts. He has been a staple of the WWE for decades but has slowly phased out of it. His Hollywood career has taken off and that has become his priority.
Will John Cena return to WWE in 2024?
What that means for his imminent WWE future is unclear, though. He did show up at WrestleMania 40 in a shocking moment. The Rock quickly got rid of him, though.
In his prime, Cena was at the mountaintop of the company. More recently, Cena has become a team player and puts over younger talent such as Austin Theory and Solo Sikoa.
However, at the same time, he is tied for the most world championship reigns ever (16) with Ric Flair. Currently, the world champions are Cody Rhodes and Damian Priest. If/when Cena returns, it will be interesting to see if he intends to win a world title and finally break his tie with Flair.
Until then, WWE fans will have to wait for Cena's triumphant return. He shocked fans in fall 2023 when he returned for a short stint. This came amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike, though, which prevented actors from filming and promoting their projects.
John Cena's Hollywood career
Despite criticizing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for ditching WWE for Hollywood, Cena has done the same. His career started by acting in WWE-produced movies such as The Marine and 12 Rounds. He would make small appearances in Fred: The Movie before getting into high-profile projects such as Trainwreck, Sisters, and Daddy's Home.
2018 saw the rise of Cena as an actor. He starred in the rom-com Blockers as well as the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee. He would go on to voice a role in Dolittle before starring in F9, a Fast and Furious movie.
Roles in The Suicide Squad, Vacation Friends, Fast X, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Barbie, and Argylle followed. Additionally, Cena leads the James Gunn-created DCU series, Peacemaker. It is a spin-off series for his character in The Suicide Squad.
