Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James took to social media on Thursday morning to share an essay that former U.S. Representative John Lewis wrote for The New York Times shortly before his passing. The day of the John Lewis funeral, it is worth noting, came with several people doing similar things.

Sadly, John Lewis passed away in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month at the age of 80 after a bout with pancreatic cancer. He was a known activist for social injustice, and a figure of civil leadership to many. Lewis also joined Martin Luther King Jr. for the 1963 March on Washington and campaigned with him all across the South.

In what proved to be some of his last words, John Lewis wrote that he was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement:

“While my time here has now come to an end, I want you to know that in the last days and hours of my life you inspired me,” John Lewis wrote. “You filled me with hope about the next chapter of the great American story when you used your power to make a difference in our society. Millions of people motivated simply by human compassion laid down the burdens of division. Around the country and the world you set aside race, class, age, language and nationality to demand respect for human dignity.”

In an effort to shed even more light on social injustices across the globe, some NBA players will display unique messages on their jerseys as the season resumes in Orlando. LeBron James has said that he will not take this route, but he also vowed to use his platform to highlight the ongoing situation.

“This is a mission that I've been on for a long time now,” LeBron James said in a recent interview with ESPN, referring to his work in racial equality. “It's great that now a lot of people's ears are opening. A lot of people are understanding and recognizing.

A lot of people are still afraid to talk about it, but the racism that goes on in America, especially for people of color, is still here. We will continue to push the envelope, and let people know that we are human as well — no matter our skin color, how we look, or how we sound.”

James and the Lakers kick off their bubble campaign on Thursday night with a matchup against the Clippers. Let's see what sort of action The King takes on social injustice as the season plays out. Outside of that, on the day of the John Lewis funeral, many in a nation mourn the loss of a pioneer.
