The L.A. Clippers could potentially wind up getting the better of the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason in the midst of the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes, reportedly better suited to trade for the injury-maligned 26-year-old star.

“I'm hearing that the Clippers have a better chance at this deal than the Lakers,” said former NBA player Brendan Haywood on Sirius XM NBA Radio.

The Clippers have a plethora of assets remaining from their trade with the Houston Rockets after dealing Chris Paul last offseason. L.A. has been rumored to be willing to ship out forward Tobias Harris, who plays the same position as Leonard.

They also have consecutive picks on this Thursday's NBA Draft, with the 12th and 13th overall selections, and could use either to complete this deal.

The Lakers have plenty of cap space, enough to sign two max-level free agents, but that in itself won't help them in a trade scenario, as they would need enough assets or a high enough draft pick to entice the Spurs for Leonard's services.

Their best shot to net Leonard is as a free agent on 2019, though the Spurs would be far pressed to let him go to a Western Conference rival for nothing.

Ultimately, the Spurs hold all the power here, as they're likely to first arrange a face-to-face meeting with Leonard before gearing up any trade talks with teams around The Association.
