What does Kevin Durant, Michael Phelps, and Katie Ledecky have in common? It may come as a surprise to many, but yes, they are all from the same state – Maryland. Now, not only does it offer great seafood, the state also has world-class athletes who are dominating the Olympics.

Given that they share the same home-state, this gives the newly-acquired small forward of the Golden State Warriors additional reasons to cheer them on. Last week, photos and videos surfaced on how animated Durant and his USA Basketball teammates cheered on while watching the swimming events.

In Sam Amick's report from USA Today Sports, the former NBA MVP said that they need stick together since they're in Rio and are only from a small state:

We're all from the same state – and we're over in Rio, You're from Maryland, a small state, and we've got to stick together, man. Seeing Katie and just knowing that she comes from the same area I come from. … Just to see that (is unreal). I've always been proud to be from Maryland, but it just took it to another level when I saw those two win gold medals.”

The Olympics definitely show the camaraderie of athletes especially the ones from the same country. And even if Durant is a superstar in his own right, he is proud to show everyone that he knows how to appreciate greatness  – and interconnectedness.

He even had this to say on what Phelps' performance means to him and knows how rare these opportunities come:

“You put your ego to the side, man, when you're watching greatness, You can appreciate greatness, especially at this stage, being an Olympian. You just don't get this (any other time). I can't just say, ‘Oh, I'm going to watch Michael Phelps go win the gold.' People can come watch us play 82 nights a year (during the NBA season), but we can't just go watch Michael Phelps win a gold medal. I've always been a fan (of his).”

With how the US Basketball Team is streaking and still remain unbeaten, they're on track to defend their gold medal and add on to the list of winners for the country. This time though, we'll have to wait and see if the swimmers will watch one of the games featuring Durant and company.
