More often than not, every single championship team seems to have at least one savvy veteran on the roster that is way past their prime. They are easy to spot because they were once household names who've spent their best years on floundering teams and are now relegated to ring-chasing before officially calling it quits.
Needless to say, Sacramento Kings veteran forward Vince Carter did not want to be that player. Carter discussed why he chose to sign with the Kings rather than the defending champion Golden State Warriors after becoming a free agent over the summer, in a piece by Marc J. Spears for The Undefeated:
“The opportunity was there [to sign with Golden State], but they couldn’t match what was offered [in Sacramento],” the Kings forward wrote. “I just didn’t want to sit on the bench. I wanted to be able to play. It’s easy to sit on the bench and ride it out. But it just wasn’t the right thing.”
Although Carter's actions were honorable, the 40-year old still has yet to make a profound impact on this struggling Kings team. The veteran forward is averaging just 2.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game this season.
Regardless, Vince Carter has enjoyed an extremely-accomplished career and will undoubtedly go down as one of the most electrifying players of his generation. That very well could be another reason why he passed up on what may have been a sure thing with the juggernaut Warriors.
