A standard basketball game is played over the course of four quarters, but the New York Knicks probably are wishing it is only three periods long after taking a 123-118 overtime loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday.
Up by 14 points entering the final quarter, the Knicks looked like they were on their way to winning their first contest in three games. The Pelicans had other things in mind, though, as they erased that deficit to win it in extra time, sending the Knicks to five games below of .500.
The Knicks were simply helpless in containing Anthony Davis in the fourth quarter and in overtime, where the Pelicans big man had 13 of his game-high 48 points. Kristaps Porzingis, meanwhile, scored 25 points but only shot 1-of-7 from the field after the third quarter.

Just to further illustrate how bad the Knicks are in holding big leads, the team has also lost twice this season in games in which they had at least a 15-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, per Basketball Reference.
Still, there are a plenty of time for the Knicks to correct their ways, though they should also be reminded that their fans’ collective patience is rapidly thinning. New York will play division rivals Brooklyn Nets on Monday on the road.
