It is only natural for every household player to be dubbed with a fitting nickname. There's “The Klaw” for San Antonio Spurs superstar Kawhi Leonard and “The King” for Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.

When it came time for New York Knicks budding superstar Kristaps Porzingis, he was unlike anything this league has seen before. As a result, he was named the “The Unicorn” by Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant. Although the reasons behind it were quite obvious, Porzingis admitted he was a bit perplexed by his new nickname during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:

“At first I was a little confused,” Porzingis said. “It's like, what is this, a horse with a ponytail? Like, what? What does it mean? But then they kind of explained it to me, what he tried to say is that I was a unique player. It was nice to hear him say good things about me.”

Apparently, there is not much talk about unicorns in Porzingis' home country of Latvia. Regardless, it was not long before he fully embraced his likeness to the mythical creature.

Porzingis has followed up on Durant's notion by averaging 25.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. More importantly, he looks every bit of the franchise player New York is pulling for him to be.
