The New York Knicks have yet to officially sign Jalen Brunson to a new deal, and it's now clear why. The ‘Bockers are still clearing cap space to accommodate him, with their latest decision on Taj Gibson a clear proof of that.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Knicks have waived Gibson and his non-guaranteed contract for 2022-23 to make room for the Brunson signing. To recall, New York beat the Dallas Mavericks by offering the guard a four-year, $104 million deal in free agency. That's way more what the Mavs wanted to offer for the playmaker who took over for them when Luka Doncic was injured and out and helped them advance in the 2022 playoffs.

For what it's worth, Jalen Brunson's official signing with New York will likely have to wait for a couple more days since he and the Knicks still have some work to do to get things done. As NBA insider Marc Stein also reported, while the deal should be coming soon, it remains unlikely to happen before the weekend because the veteran guard still has to complete his physical with his new team.

The Knicks went all-out to steal Brunson away from the Mavs–to the point they even risked tampering investigations considering how things proceeded–so it's unlikely there will be any kind of setback in the move. For now, New Yorkers just have to wait for their new floor general until he can sign his contract and get things started in the Big Apple.

As for Taj Gibson, several teams have reportedly expressed interest in signing him, and so he could find a new franchise to join sooner or later following his exit.
