The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly making a huge move, leading lots of basketball fans to the same question: what does it mean for LeBron James?

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski dropped an early-morning W0j Bomb when he reported that the Lakers are preparing a huge offer to Dan Hurley, the head coach of the UConn men’s basketball team, to be their next head coach. Hurley leaving UConn straight off of its second consecutive national championship would be a massive decision. But his impressive coaching job there has set him up nicely to receive a major payday from the Lakers and the chance to prove himself at the NBA level.

The news of the Lakers' immense interest in Hurley now calls into question what happens — or happened — with JJ Redick. The 15-year NBA veteran and current broadcaster/podcaster has been mentioned repeatedly as a target for LA, one that the franchise was reportedly “zeroing in” on before Redick blasted that rumor himself.

With James and Redick's relationship so close after starting a podcast together (and playing against each other in the NBA for over a decade), how does this news of Hurley affect where the Lakers go forward with their superstar? A lot of reactions to the Hurley news suggested that it was a response to the likelihood that James, who can enter unrestricted free agency this offseason, will leave Los Angeles.

Plenty of others imagined hilarious scenarios that could unfold with the incredibly intense Hurley coaching James on the Lakers.

If this news comes as a blindside to Redick and James was fully on board with him becoming L.A.'s new head coach, it may cause a rift between him and the team. However, while the Lakers moving away from Redick is a shock, it may not indicate that James is bound to leave.

Lakers making shocking pivot to Dan Hurley in head coach search

Hurley becoming the Lakers' head coach may actually implore James to stay with the Lakers. Wojnarowski wrote in his report that having Hurley implement his systems in LA and having his developmental talents for James' son, Bronny, makes for an intriguing situation. James still hopes to play with his son and, while Hurley's player development would obviously extend to others on the team, he would seemingly be very happy to have such a great coach help his son improve.

A tweet from James from this past April showed his admiration for Hurley. In response to a video clip of Redick and Hurley talking on The Old Man and the Three, James replied that Hurley and his UConn staff have been “super creative” with their offense.

The Lakers going with a coach that actually has experience coaching makes sense, even if it has all come at the collegiate and high-school levels. With Redick calling the NBA Finals, he has plenty to focus on right now and keep him busy should he not make the jump to the coaching ranks.

There’s never a dull moment for the Lakers, who are eager to keep winning with James and bounce back from getting stomped out of the playoffs in the first round.
