In the closing seconds of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers, referee Marc Davis blew the whistle on a JR Smith foul. After the game, Smith called out Davis, noting that his call was the “most meaningless ever.”

With Game 1 in the bag for the Lakers, Frank Vogel took out his starters and inserted Smith and the rest into the game. Though the contest was practically over, the referees still had a job to do. Smith was caught for a foul and wasn't too pleased with it.

Smith seems to have moved on quickly from that call. After all, the Lakers now lead 1-0 in the NBA Finals after a masterful performance. This is Smith's fifth NBA Finals appearance. He appeared in four consecutive NBA Finals during his stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His first title came in 2016 after their 3-1 comeback against the Golden State Warriors.

After his fallout with the Cavaliers, the Lakers picked him up in July as a replacement for guard Avery Bradley. Though Smith hasn't played much in the playoffs, his mere presence and significant playoff experience make him a great asset to the team. Smith is actually the ninth all-time in 3-point field goals made in the playoffs.

After the Lakers' 116-98 victory over the Heat, fans and analysts strongly believe that the Purple and Gold are on their way to claim that elusive Larry O'Brien trophy. Though anything can still happen, the Lakers just need to win three more games for Smith to get his second title ring.
