It's only a matter of time until Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James dethrones Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time scoring leader. Abdul-Jabbar has held the record since 1984, but James is rapidly approaching the mark that's stood for more than three decades. Kareem was asked about James eventually surpassing his record, and the Lakers legend was completely candid, revealing “it's about time” his record was overtaken, and that he thinks LeBron is deserving of the title.

ESPN's Malika Andrews asked Kareem the questions during the ESPN broadcast of the Lakers' matchup with the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, to which the 74-year-old let his true feelings be known. There will be no jealously on the end of Abdul-Jabbar, who expressed that he feels James has earned the right to be known as the all-time leading scorer.

At age 37, James is averaging 30.3 points per game, the second-most in his career. He currently sits at 37,062 points throughout his NBA career, trailing Kareem's record of 38,387 points by a little more than 1,000. It seems near certain that James will overtake Abdul-Jabbar at some point in the next couple of seasons, barring injury.

Rather than get defensive over his longstanding record, Kareem is excited to see his crown handed on to LeBron. To see the scoring title go from one Laker to another would be a special feat for fans in Los Angeles, and it seems Abdul-Jabbar shares that sentiment.

Officially, Abdul-Jabbar has held the record since 1984, when he surpassed Wilt Chamberlain's 31,420 career points mark. Almost 40 years later, LeBron is on the precipice of dethroning Kareem, but there's no ill-will from the legendary Laker.
