The Los Angeles Lakers are moving towards signing Sekou Doumbouya to a two-way contract.

The Athletic's Shams Charania first reported the news. The Lakers formally announced the signing a few hours later:

Doumbouya, 20, was selected No. 15 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons.

As a rookie, the 6'8, 230-pound combo-forward averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds on 39.0% shooting over 19.8 minutes in 38 games (19 starts). In 2020-21, he appeared in 56 games (11 starts), putting up 5.1 points and 2.6 rebounds on 37.9% shooting.

Los Angeles has one two-way spot open after converting undrafted rookie Austin Reaves' deal into a two-year guarantee, thereby giving Reaves a spot on the active roster. Fellow undrafted rookie Joel Ayayi is playing under the Lakers' other two-way deal.

However, the Lakers already have 20 players in training camp — the maximum allowed — meaning somebody will have to be waived to make room for Doumbouya. Los Angeles inked Frank Mason III to a training camp deal last week.

Earlier in the offseason, Doumbouya was part of the trade that sent DeAndre Jordan from the Brooklyn Nets to the Pistons. Jordan was bought out and signed with the Lakers on the veteran's minimum. Ironically, the Lakers now have two of the pieces involved in that swap.

Doumbouya actually played against the Lakers in the first preseason game of the year, on Oct. 3, as a member of the Nets (he scored 11 points in 13 minutes). Shortly thereafter, he was dealt to the Houston Rockets for cap-saving reasons, then was promptly waived.

Doumbouya has French citizenship and is the first player born in Guinea to be drafted into the NBA.
