It's now official: an avid (and extremely wealthy) collector has just agreed to part ways with a whopping $1.8 million for a rookie card of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

According to Darren Rovell of Action Network, the card was sold at Goldin Auctions. The staggering price tag also set a record for a modern-day card.

Naturally, we had to check out the profile of the auction winner: Leore Avidar. According to his Twitter bio, he is the CEO and co-founder of Lob.com, a B2B email platform service.

Avidar also noted that he is a professional collector, so this recent multi-million dollar purchase is all in a day's work for him. Then again, it's not every day you spend nearly $2 million for a basketball card.

For what it's worth, the same rookie card of the Lakers superstar set a record for an opening bid worth $960,000 — which in itself was already mind-boggling. As it turns out, that wasn't even close to the actual valuation of the card, as it's final selling price nearly doubled from that initial amount.

Pieces from the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant tend to sell for a high price, so it might not be that surprising to see a LeBron card selling for millions of dollars. After all, collectors and businessmen see memorabilia from these players as investments — especially considering they are considered as the greatest players in NBA history.
