Los Angeles Lakers second-year point guard Lonzo Ball has been shut down for the season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Ball suffered a Grade 3 left ankle sprain on Jan. 19 against the Houston Rockets. The guard also has a bone bruise in his left ankle.

Lonzo had his left ankle re-evaluated by doctors on Saturday, and the two sides agreed to shut Ball down for the season.

The Lakers have 17 games remaining on the season and are pretty much out of the playoff race, so it makes sense for the organization to shut Lonzo Ball down.

In his second season with the Lakers, Lonzo Ball averaged 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. The 21-year-old, who was the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of UCLA, shot 40.6 percent from the field, 32.9 percent from beyond the arc and 41.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Lakers went just 5-13 without Ball when he got hurt against the Rockets. This season has been a disaster ever since Christmas. That's when superstar LeBron James hurt his hamstring and missed 17 games.

Los Angeles' season was doomed right about then.

Ball had to rehab a knee injury last summer after undergoing surgery. Hopefully, he will have a healthy offseason this summer.
