The Los Angeles Lakers plan to talk about a contract extension with head coach Frank Vogel in the offseason, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj revealed this nugget on Saturday's edition of NBA Countdown.
The Lakers hired Vogel before the 2019-20 season and gave him a three-year contract. He promptly won an NBA title in his first season, guiding Los Angeles throughout a unique campaign that ended in the Disney World bubble.
The Lakers are hoping to repeat this season, but there have been some roadblocks along the way. Anthony Davis just returned from an absence of over two months, while LeBron James is still sidelined with his own injury.
Los Angeles just lost the first two games of Davis' return, both to the Dallas Mavericks. The Lakers are 35-25 on the season and now sit just 1.5 games ahead of the Mavs for the No. 5 seed. L.A. is 2.5 games ahead of the seventh-seeded Portland Trail Blazers, so there's not too much concern about being in the play-in tournament just yet.
Vogel deserves credit for getting the Lakers to play defense at such a high level, even with the star players on the shelf. Los Angeles has the top-ranked defense in the entire NBA.
Given his amount of success so far, it only makes sense for the Lakers to look at extending Frank Vogel once this season is over. At that point, he's hoping he'll be a two-time champion head coach, which would surely help him in negotiations.
