The Los Angeles Lakers have made the first few steps in selecting their new head coach, who will replace Luke Walton after he was let go after the 2018-19 NBA regular season.

The Lakers have already talked to former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Monty Williams and current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams. Lue and Williams are considered as the top two candidates for the coaching vacancy in Los Angeles.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Lakers will have a second meeting with both candidates with Jeanie Buss present. The first meeting with both Lue and Williams were just set up to know both candidates better and schedule a second and more detailed interview with both coaches.

Lue is considered by many as the favorite to land the Lakers coaching job. He developed a strong relationship with James during their time together in Cleveland. Lue and James led the Cavaliers to a championship in 2016 and made two more finals appearances after that.

Williams, on the other hand, is also a serious candidate and is also familiar with James. Williams had a decent stint as head coach with the Pelicans, where he built a good relationship with Anthony Davis. It is worth noting that the Lakers are expected to pursue a trade for Davis again in the offseason.

Aside from Lue and Williams, the Lakers are also expected to talk to Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka will reportedly sit down with Howard, a former teammate of James in Miami, on Tuesday to discuss the coaching vacancy.
