Lonzo Ball is without a doubt the most hyped draft prospect from this decade. One could probably go as far and say he is the most hyped draft prospect in this century. Whatever the case may be, this just shows how much attention Ball, who was not even a professional player yet, got. But he did it in his own way, the Big Baller way. A lot of previously hyped up draft prospects like LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and even Jimmer Fredette, obtained attention through their flashy, impressive basketball and athletic skills. The same can be said about Ball, who electrified crowds with his amazing passing and playmaking. But his dad, LaVar, added even more to the Ball circus.

Way before Lonzo got drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, LaVar was already speaking of his son as a member of the Lakers organization. In his mind, Lonzo was already a Laker. Before drafting him, Los Angeles had a tough argument: either drafting Lonzo and betting on his potential, but inheriting the circus around him that included his outspoken dad and a new basketball gear company, or passing on him and see him be great elsewhere. The Lakers bet on themselves and drafted Ball. A lot has happened since Lonzo was drafted, but Lakers President Magic Johnson does not regret drafting him.

According to ESPN's Ramona Shelbourne, Johnson spoke about him regretting his decisions last June:

“No, not for one minute. He's everything we thought he would be and more. And I'm talking about Lonzo.”

As for LaVar, Johnson has had no choice but to let him be who he is:

“He's marketing their business, so, hats off to him. Keep doing it. Just make sure that you allow your son to grow and us to go through our lumps and our bruises like we're going through, and things are gonna work out. Things are gonna work out for the Lakers and for Lonzo.”
