Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson received quite the honor on Thursday as the NBA renamed the Western Conference Finals MVP award after him, while the Eastern Conference Finals MVP will be named after Larry Bird.

Magic quickly reacted to the news on social media and expressed his gratitude:

The Lakers icon also had this to say:

“The NBA Conference Finals represent the last hurdle a team must face for an opportunity to make it to the big stage, the NBA Finals,” said Johnson. “I’m truly honored to have my name memorialized on the Western Conference Finals Most Valuable Player Trophy. This player excels on both ends of the court, makes his teammates better and leads his team to the greatest stage in basketball.”

Johnson led the Lakers to nine NBA Finals appearances, also winning five rings. Magic is easily one of the greatest players to ever suit up for LA and is the focal point of their dynasty years. This is really quite the honor and it must feel very, very good for Magic. At this point, it's looking like the Warriors will likely be in the conference finals against the Suns or Mavericks. Lots of star power on all these teams who could win the prestigious award. Steph Curry, Devin Booker, and maybe even Luka Doncic if they somehow pull off the upset over Phoenix.
