Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson is thrilled general manager Rob Pelinka decided to re-sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Markieff Morris, who were both unrestricted free agents this offseason.
Johnson, who used to be the Lakers’ president of basketball operations, took to Twitter to react to Caldwell-Pope and Morris coming back to Los Angeles.
I’m so glad the @Lakers resigned Markieff Morris because he shot 42% from the 3-point line during the playoffs opening up the floor for the Lakers two superstars LeBron and AD!

I’m so happy that the @Lakers resigned Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to a 3-year deal because he earned it. He played such an important role and played great on both ends of the court for the Lakers during the Finals.

The Lakers gave Kentavious Caldwell-Pope a three-year, $38.9 million contract. The shooting guard averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists during the 2019-20 regular season. KCP then put up 10.7 points, 2.1 boards and 1.3 assists in the 2020 playoffs against the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat.
Markieff Morris began the 2019-20 season with the Detroit Pistons. He was bought out after it became clear the Pistons weren’t going to make the playoffs and signed with the Lakers, who waived DeMarcus Cousins to create a roster spot for the veteran forward.
In the playoffs at Walt Disney World, Morris put up 5.9 points and shot 42.0 percent from beyond the 3-point line. The Lakers re-signed him to a one-year deal worth $2.3 million, keeping Morris away from the Los Angeles Clippers.
Magic Johnson, the best point guard in Lakers franchise history, was the one who got LeBron James to sign with the Purple and Gold in the summer of 2018. Although his resignation during the 2018-19 season was rather strange, he’ll always be beloved in Los Angeles.
