After Pau Gasol announced his retirement from the NBA in 2021, the Los Angeles Lakers quickly revealed their plan to retire his no. 16 jersey as well. Now, it seems the ceremony is happening soon.

The Lakers legend recently admitted that the jersey retirement ceremony could be held as early as next season, noting that he has already talked about it with Jeanie Buss and the LA organization.

“The ceremony could be the next season. Yes, I’ve talked to the franchise and Buss family. We are all very excited,” Gasol told Catalonian radio RAC 1, via Marc Mundet.

Pau Gasol had the most successful time of his career with the Lakers, quickly helping transform the team to title contenders and eventually winning two NBA championships in the process. With that said, it's not really surprising why the Purple and Gold franchise is retiring his jersey.

He formed an incredible partnership with the late Kobe Bryant, allowing the Lakers to compete for years. Who could forget how he helped the LA franchise fight in the 2008 NBA Finals right after he was traded mid-season from the Memphis Grizzlies?

As a Laker, Gasol averaged 17.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.4 blocks in 429 games (422 starts).

While there is no definite date yet when the Lakers are going to hold the ceremony in the 2022-23 season, the occasion will surely be an exciting one, to say the least. After all, the LA faithful can finally see Gasol's jersey go up the rafters alongside the nos. 8 and 24 jerseys of his best friend, Kobe.
