While there has not been much progress on a potential swap between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets involving their two superstar point guards in Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving, it is clear that this deal isn't dead just yet. As a matter of fact, this potential blockbuster trade is picking up steam again, with the San Antonio Spurs now thrown into the mix.

According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the Spurs could hold the key to making a deal work between the Lakers and the Spurs:

The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers have held preliminary discussions on a Kyrie Irving trade, and sources indicate the teams are exploring the potential of pulling the San Antonio Spurs into a multi-team deal.

The Spurs made a lot of noise of late after they traded All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks. San Antonio is clearly entering a rebuild mode after sending away their best player in exchange for future assets. This also means that the Spurs have a ton of cap room available — enough to potentially absorb Westbrook's gargantuan deal.

Russell Westbrook obviously doesn't fit in the Spurs' current plans, and he will likely be headed for a buyout if the Spurs end up trading for him. The Lakers (and the Nets) will need to compensate San Antonio with more future assets in order for them to agree to such an arrangement.

In a perfect scenario, this could be a win-win situation for all parties involved. The Lakers get Kyrie, the Spurs acquire more assets that will help them build for their future, while the Nets could potentially generate a huge trade exception that could match Irving's outgoing salary.
