Dwight Howard's first stint with the Los Angeles Lakers was a disaster, but he redeemed himself as a quality backup center in the 2019-20 championship season. Howard was hoping to return to the Lakers this past season and even thought he had a deal, but that wasn't the case and he wound up signing with the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.

Now, however, Howard would like to return to Los Angeles again, according to Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.

The Lakers are retooling their roster after losing in the first round this past season. They already made a big trade to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards, with Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope heading out. Andre Drummond is a free agent and a candidate to go elsewhere. Marc Gasol is 36 years old and running out of gas.

Howard is 35 himself, but he was a bit more productive than Gasol this past season as Joel Embiid's backup. Howard definitely isn't starter material at this point, but he could be a nice backup piece for the Lakers once again as Anthony Davis looks to play more center. The veteran averaged 7.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game in 2020-21.
