On Thursday, Fox Sports analyst Chris Broussard joined Undisputed. Broussard opened the segment by saying he didn't believe superstar free agents Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving would join LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. He instead responded with two different targets – Anthony Davis and Jimmy Butler.
During the show, he discussed the future of the Lakers with co-hosts Skip Bayless, Shannon Sharpe and Jenny Taft. Via the show's Twitter account:
The Lakers have been connected to Davis since well before this year's trade deadline. The team made a push to acquire the New Orleans Pelicans star, reportedly offering their entire young core. However, no trade was finalized, and Davis remained a Pelican. And on Wednesday, reports surfaced suggesting there is ‘no way' the Pelicans will trade Davis to Los Angeles this summer.
But if the Lakers could pull it off, Davis would be a huge addition to the team. This season, the star center is averaging 26.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 51.5%. The six-time All-Star is set to hit free agency following the 2019-20 season unless he exercises his player option, according to Spotrac.
Butler, on the other hand, is set to hit free agency this offseason. A dramatic fall led to his midseason trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Philadelphia 76ers. The four-time All-Star is averaging 18.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 47.0%.
James has made the postseason in a whopping 13 consecutive seasons. But this year, his streak is in jeopardy, as the Lakers are running out of time to make a late-season push. The storied L.A. franchise made a huge investment in James last offseason, and vice versa. There's no doubt that both will do whatever it takes to rebound and make the playoffs next season.
It might be a long shot. But adding both Davis and Butler would make the Lakers an absolute force to be reckoned with next season.
