Lane Kiffin isn't buying Brian Kelly's latest attempt to gain popularity in Louisiana. Kelly spoke at an LSU men's basketball game against Ohio on December 1. He told Tigers fans how excited he and his family are to be a part of LSU — but something was off. His typical northeast United States inflection quickly became much more southern. The disingenuous accent caused many people to poke fun, including Ole Miss coach Kiffin.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Kiffin replied to ESPN reporter Elle Duncan's video of the humorous situation from earlier this month. The Ole Miss coach used the ‘thinking' and ‘laughing' emojis, which say everything they need to.

Kiffin is from Nebraska, but he has spent enough time coaching in the south to know what is real and what is a publicity stunt. In 2009, Kiffin was the head coach for the University of Tennessee. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Crimson Tide from 2014 to 2016. Since 2020, Kiffin has been the head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels.

Despite coming from Nebraska and often leaving the south to coach in other states (in between Tennessee and Alabama, he spent 2010 to 2013 at the University of Southern California), Kiffin's accent never changed the way Kelly's “seemed” to.

Duncan also had a good point in her analysis of Kelly's performance earlier this month. During his twelve years with Notre Dame, Kelly never picked up a mid-west accent. It's pretty clear that Kelly is trying to regain some public popularity through LSU, after his brutal break-up with the Fighting Irish.
