Sabrina Ionescu has been cementing herself as one of the biggest and brightest stars of the WNBA ever since the New York Liberty took her with the first overall pick of the 2020 WNBA Draft. Her combination of marksmanship from deep and playmaking have put her in Diana Taurasi territory multiple times over — an incredible feat for the 25-year old guard. With her stellar play, Ionescu earned herself a signature shoe from Nike, the Sabrina 1s.

The shoe game for our women hoopers have lagged far behind the men's, so it was a huge achievement for the Liberty guard when Nike announced that it would be releasing a signature shoe for her. And this shoe isn't just your run of the mill basketball sneakers. It contains a lot of details that give the signature shoe its personality, mirroring that of its owner's.

Speaking on an episode of First We Feast's Snacked series on YouTube, Sabrina Ionescu revealed the little details that imbue the Sabrina 1s with her identity, including the Liberty guard's Romanian heritage that she loves paying homage to whenever she could.

“My Sabrina 1 signature sneaker does have some hidden designs of Romanian calligraphy on them and on just the outsole on the design of the shoe. That was something that I was super excited to incorporate just because it's so much about who I am, how I've been able to grow up in that household,” Ionescu said.

The Liberty guard wanted to honor her parents by paying tribute to her family's decision to move from Romania to the United States, and every time she wears her signature shoes, she manages to do just that.

“With my entire family immigrating here from Romania, I wanted to be able to show that in a shoe,” Ionescu added.

The Sabrina 1s should be a commercial success, as the pair is an easy sell for anyone regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Its design is clean and easy to pair with usual articles of clothing, whether in a more casual sense or in a sports setting. The whole world will be waiting for whatever the Liberty star cooks up next with the inevitable release of the Sabrina 2s.
