It’s been a couple of years now since Calvin Johnson surprisingly retired from the NFL at just 30 years of age. And according to the former Detriot Lions great himself, he’s going to stay retired.

Megatron told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that even if he still wanted to play, his body won’t allow him to. His ankles, in particular, are so shot that he can’t even bend them to run properly anymore.

“I don’t [think so], man, cause I get up from the bed sometimes in the morning, I’m just like, I shuffle across the ground cause I can’t bend my ankles,” Johnson said. “That was my problem when I played, just ankle’s always stuck or swelled up, I can’t flex them. If you can’t flex your ankles then you’re just running flat-footed all the time.”

While Johnson didn't miss too many games for his career — he had just one season where he missed more than two games — he was almost always battling different injuries. But it was a testament to his brilliance that even when he was banged up, he still put up some remarkable numbers on a consistent basis.

It’s so sad to hear that even at just 32 years of age, Johnson’s body is so damaged that he can no longer perform some pretty basic physical movements. But that’s the toll a violent sport like football takes on one’s body, and he’ll just have to live with those consequences for the rest of his life. Luckily for Johnson, he says he doesn’t have any other major health issues like concussions.

After years of putting his body through so much punishment, Johnson should now just rest his worn out body and enjoy his life as best he can.
