Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp takes a subtle dig at England boss Gareth Southgate for not including Joe Gomez in the team's latest lineup.

The dig stems from John Stones' inclusion to the England squad, despite a lackluster start to this season—not seeing action. The defender has been left out at Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola opting to utilize Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte.

Stones started for England last game and saw heavy minutes with the Three Lions during their Euro 2020 campaign; he ended up contributing significantly to England's impressive run.

Despite being known for choosing players based on fitness and form, it seems that Southgate has held on to Stones' contribution in the past.

On the other hand, Gomez has not experienced a call-up from England for quite some time now, despite working hard to bounce back from an injury suffered last year. The center-back also appeared in five matches for Liverpool this season, something far different from Stones' recent activity.

Klopp looks surprised to see Stones get a call-up, stressing that Gomez deserves the roster spot.

“Sometimes Gareth reacts if you are not playing for your club you can't play for the national team,” said the German.

“Obviously there is a special rule for Mr. Stones.

“But Joe [Gomez] didn't get a call-up.”

For now, England is on track for the 2022 World Cup, currently on top of their qualifying group with 20 points.
