Tiger Woods has not played golf professionally in 508 days. He was in a really bad car accident 14 months ago that left his leg mangled, and forced him to have what doctors referred to as “significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity.” Yet, the surgery was successful and after the prolonged absense, Woods made his triumphant return to golf Thursday.

It’s only fitting that his first round of golf would be at his home away from home, The Masters. Woods battled all day, but after posting an opening round -1 under 71, he could not help but smile during his post round interview.

Woods initially described his emotions hitting off the first tee and he acknowledged he did not warm up well. “I felt warm, go play… execute each shot… and I was able to get into the red. I made two stupid mistakes at eight, back to back, loss of concentration a little bit there. But I fought back.”

Woods was then asked about what this round taught him about his body’s ability to play with such a long layoff.

“I figured once that adrenaline kicks in… I get fired up and into my own little world, I should be able to handle business,” Woods said.

But this was still only one round of four that will be needed in order for Woods to claim his sixth Green Jacket. Finally, Tiger was asked about his recovery and what the next 16 hours or so will look like.

Woods, with a big smile on his face laughing, said “lots of ice.” No doubt, Tiger will need his body to recover. He had an early tee time Thursday, which means he goes out late on Friday. That gives him a bit more rest than usual and should help.
